Throughout the latter part of 1975 and early 1976, an idea of a park for the town of Cumming was informally discussed. The need was there, by general consensus, however, the city government was in no position to develop such a project for a variety of reasons, mostly monetary and physical.
On July 22, 1976, a loose knit group met at the Cumming Grain and Supply office and formed the Cumming Community Park Association. Those who participated an assumed the initial six member group or board were Edward Harkin, Bob King, Tom King, John Babyar, Tom Griffey and Bill Neubauer. Ed Harkin was selected chairperson. Those who have served on the six person board from 1976 to 1987 include Jerry Gervais, Irvin Flinn, Bill Hartshorn and Todd Ohmart.
The original purpose of the board was to gather funds for the development of a park within the city limits of Cumming. The group sponsored many fund raising projects: Hog roasts, dances and raffles which were well attended by the community. Parts of the funds accumulated over the years were used along with donations and joint participation with the City of Cumming to purchase several pieces of park and playground equipment located across the street from St. John's Church (now Egnacios). One function that became an annual event was the "Fourth of July Softball Game" held the Sunday afternoon surrounding the observance of July 4th.
It is hoped that in years to come, the association could accumulate sufficient funds to purchase and donate a parcel of ground to the City of Cumming equipped with park equipment for community use and benefit.
All members of the board
are volunteers and in all functions or activities, their efforts and time are
donated.
